Migrating from InfoPath — Why Now Is the Time to Switch to Form Migrator

For many organisations, Microsoft InfoPath has long been the backbone for building and deploying forms within SharePoint. But with InfoPath officially deprecated, continuing to rely on it poses growing risks. This article explains why migrating sooner rather than later is essential, what is at stake, and how Form Migrator helps organisations move safely to modern platforms.

What’s happening with InfoPath?

InfoPath was first introduced in 2003 and quickly became a standard tool for designing business forms in SharePoint. Its last release, InfoPath 2013, was confirmed as the final version, with no future updates planned.

Crucially, support for InfoPath is coming to an end. The server-side component, InfoPath Forms Services, will be removed from SharePoint Online on 14 July 2026.

While many organisations continue to use InfoPath because it is familiar and historically reliable, it no longer aligns with modern requirements. It offers a dated user experience, poor mobile support, and limited integration with today’s Microsoft 365 services.

The risks of waiting — and why delay is dangerous

Relying on InfoPath beyond its end-of-life exposes organisations to significant risk. Once support ends, there will be no security updates or fixes, increasing vulnerability and compatibility issues.

Legacy InfoPath forms are also difficult to evolve. As compliance obligations, workflows and reporting needs change, these forms become increasingly costly to maintain. In the worst cases, organisations risk broken processes, data integrity issues, or complete loss of form functionality.

For any organisation using InfoPath form libraries or customised list forms, July 2026 represents a firm deadline. After this point, InfoPath forms will no longer function within Microsoft 365.

Form Migrator explained

Form Migrator provides a structured, reliable way to move away from InfoPath. It is designed to migrate both form definitions and their underlying data, ensuring that historical information and business logic are preserved.

Key capabilities:

  • Comprehensive migration: Supports legacy forms created with InfoPath, PDF-based solutions, and older on-premises tools, enabling migration to modern platforms such as Power Apps, Lightning Forms, Forms Studio, or directly into SharePoint Lists.
  • Preservation of logic and data: Migrates layouts, controls, rules, metadata, attachments, and field relationships so migrated forms continue to behave as expected.
  • On-premises execution: Runs as a desktop application, keeping analysis and data migration local and ensuring sensitive data does not leave the organisation’s network.
  • Flexible targets: Enables migration to list-integrated or canvas Power Apps, or alternative modern form technologies, allowing organisations to align migrations with their broader strategy.
  • ROI visibility: Includes analysis tools that estimate the time and cost savings compared with manually rebuilding forms.

Why migrating from InfoPath matters

Modernising form solutions delivers clear long-term benefits:

  • Future-proofing: Removes dependency on deprecated technology and avoids the risk of sudden failures after 2026.
  • Better user experience: Modern forms are responsive, accessible on mobile devices, and integrate seamlessly with current Microsoft 365 services.
  • Lower maintenance effort: Modern platforms are easier to update, extend and support, reducing reliance on legacy skills.
  • Data continuity: Existing records, metadata and attachments are retained, protecting business-critical information.

Preparing for migration

A successful migration begins with understanding what exists today. Organisations should identify where InfoPath is used, how many forms are involved, whether form libraries or customised list forms are in play, and how much historical data is stored.

Form library XML data, in particular, is often overlooked and can be more complex than expected. Addressing this early prevents delays and unexpected issues later in the project.

Conclusion: act before the deadline

The end of InfoPath support is approaching quickly. With 14 July 2026 as the cut-off, delaying migration increases operational and compliance risk.

Form Migrator provides a practical, low-risk path to modern form technologies, preserving existing data and logic while enabling organisations to move forward with confidence. Starting early reduces pressure, avoids rushed decisions, and ensures continuity for users and business processes.
